Hey everyone! What an exciting day for TMNT fans! I believe the appropriate word today would be “COWABUNGA!!” Make sure you get to a local comic shop and pick up your copy (or copies) of the very first TMNT comic from IDW.
As you probably already know, there are 12 variant covers for this edition (13 if you count the SDCC Ash Can edition). If you didn’t know that, then read this. Many of these variant covers will be extremely hard to acquire either due to scarcity or cost.
Some are incentive covers that you only get if you purchase enough quantity of the regular edition (or if you plunk down enough $$ to acquire it outright). This will be especially true for the hand-drawn Kevin Eastman variant (cover RI D). I tend to think this will become the “holy grail” of the IDW TMNT #1 covers because this was the 50 copy incentive version (i.e., you had to purchase 50 regular copies to get it).
Other covers (like the Hastings or the Detroit Fanfare) are exclusives for stores, shops, or conventions and, I believe, are limited to 1,000 copies each. Most of these exclusives can be acquired online but are somewhat pricey at about $20/each. I tend to believe that the Hastings cover and the Detroit Fanfare cover will be the two most scarce in this bunch. I say this for the Detroit version because I have yet to find a way to acquire it online and, right now, the only way I know to get it is at the Detroit Fanfare Convention Sept. 24-25. (P.S. – if you’re going to the Detroit Fanfare Convention and are willing to pick me up one of these I promise I’ll make it worth your while…contact me.) As for the Hastings variant, these are available only at Hastings stores (or the one Tradesmart store in suburban Denver, CO). Since these stores seem to be isolated mainly in the western and mid-western United States, this could be a hard edition for some to find.
Well, I hope you were able to find the variants you were looking for. I will be posting pics of the variants I acquire here in the next few weeks. I was hoping to have them all by the end of the week but the Eastman sketch variants are currently delaying my entire order. In the meantime, I’ve uploaded a picture of the Hastings variant cover (RE Hastings) for your enjoyment as well as the inside front of that edition (which, just like the other editions, has pictures of all the variant covers).
It’s great to have you back Leo, Raph, Mike, and Don…really, really great!
