SUMMARY:

GOLD EDITION (1 of 10) / Hand-numbered and autographed by Kevin Eastman or Peter Laird with original sketch on the back cover.

This rare and elusive variant of Turtlemania is one of the only TMNT variants that I’ve never been able to acquire in over 30 years of collecting TMNT comic books.  I’ve had my chances to acquire this book – quite a few chances actually – but the asking price each time was always just a bit out of reach for my budget.  As of 2019, this book has become highly sought-after for its rarity alone (not just by TMNT collectors), causing prices to escalate astronomically.  The same is happening for any of the 100 copies of Turtlemania SILVER.

Although this book is one I’ll likely never be able to own, for the sake of documentation I’ll use this page to compile and document everything known about Turtlemania GOLD, including images of every copy of Turtlemania GOLD to have surfaced along with key details of each for reference.  If you own a copy of Turtlemania GOLD and would like to provide high-res pictures of your book (or any other details) to be included on this page, please get in touch with me by email (or use the Contact Me form on the right side of the Blog main page).

Facts about Turtlemania GOLD:

  • Only 10 copies are known to exist (with a few outlying proofs, etc.).
  • Each of the 10 books were hand-numbered (#1 of 10, etc.). each with a custom sketch by Eastman or Laird and signed
    • The first five (#1-5) numbered books have a sketch by Kevin Eastman.
    • The last five (#6-10) numbered books have a sketch by Peter Laird.

Known Turtlemania GOLD editions:

  • #000 of 000 (Proof cover only) CGC CVR Signature Series Grade (#202320001) – current owner known (E.T.); not attached to a book and not originally signed and/or sketched by Eastman or Laird (sketches/signatures now present on this cover were acquired by the current owner on July 18, 2017 (Eastman) and October 13, 2018 (Laird); similar proof covers exist for the Silver version as well (one of which the owner of this Gold cover also owns).  Sold for $800 on eBay in August 2007.
  • #00 of 00 (Proof) ungraded – current owner known (Mitchell – HeebyGB); a copy of Turtlemania that contains three covers (Gold, Silver, & Regular-white) with “Proof / 00” written on one of the covers along with “#1 / 3000” and Robert Wilson’s signature.  This copy is in very poor condition and was sold on eBay for $3,050 on Sept. 19, 2018.  This is the same “#00 of 00 (Proof)” copy listed on the Turtlemania SILVER page.
  • Un-Numbered Sample (Cover only) CGC CVR Universal Grade (#2049814001) – current owner unknown; not attached to a book and not signed and/or sketched by Eastman or Laird; “Sample” written on the back.  This cover is in very good condition with minor staining on the back; sold on eBay for $2,550 on Dec. 08 or 09, 2019 (after the auction ended on Dec. 08, 2019, the seller re-listed this again on Dec. 09 which then apparently immediately sold for Buy It Now of $2,550).
  • #1 of 10 (Eastman Sketch) grading status unknown – current owner unknown
  • #2 of 10 (Eastman Sketch)CGC 9.2 Qualified Grade (#0011197001) – current owner unknown
  • #3 of 10 (Eastman Sketch) CGC 9.6 Qualified Grade (# unknown) – current owner known (private but unverified); known as the Turtlemania Special Gold Edition (on the CGC Census) – of which two copies exist on the census – #3 and #7 – it’s unknown why the #7 was classified as “Special Gold Edition” since it is not believed to have multiple covers like the #3; the most unique of the Turtlemania Gold books; this copy has four covers: 2 Gold covers (one of which – the outer cover – is not attached to the book itself), 1 Silver cover, 1 Regular (white) cover.  The inner Gold cover has an Eastman sketch and was originally numbered “Sample / 00.”  At some point, that was later marked out with a line and then a “3 / 10” was added just above that.  The outer Gold cover also has “3 / 10” marked on it but no sketch by Eastman; it has been signed by Robert Wilson and notarized as being the 3 / 10 issue of Turtlemania Gold.
  • #4 of 10 (Eastman Sketch) grading status unknown – current owner unknown; one of two copies sold on eBay for $450 each on July 7, 2012
  • #5 of 10 (Eastman Sketch) grading status unknown – current owner unknown; the only copy of Turtlemania Gold that has yet to surface; no images exist for this edition but it is assumed to contain the fifth Kevin Eastman sketch.
  • #6 of 10 (Laird Sketch) CGC 9.2 Qualified Grade (#0198243003) – current owner unknown; one of two copies sold on eBay for $450 each on July 7, 2012; this copy is also signed on the back cover by Kevin Eastman.  This copy changed hands again on Dec. 8, 2019 when it was listed on eBay, selling for $28,200.
  • #7 of 10 (Laird Sketch) CGC 9.0 Qualified Grade (#2017634002) – current owner known (Marwan Al Khaja); one of two copies of Turtlemania Gold to be classified by CGC as “Special Gold Edition” (#3 is the other copy); this copy sold at auction (ComicLink) for $58K on May 29, 2019 (along with a Turtlemania SILVER copy that sold for $8,100)
