After discovering that The TMNT #1 Production Negatives were responsible for the creation of the 2nd printing, the next logical step was to then compare the negatives with the pages from a 1st printing; to do the same as I had with the 2nd and 3rd printings – overlay the negatives on every page. With my 1st printing copy of TMNT #1 encapsulated in plastic, I was stuck. To prove my assumptions, I needed to gain access to a 1st printing that I could inspect; an ungraded “raw” copy – no easy task. Not only is TMNT #1 1st printingthe most sought-after Copper Age comic book, it’s also worth thousands of dollars – even copies in rough condition. I know a lot of collectors with a TMNT #1 1st printing in their collection but most of those are graded and slabbed – the inside pages inaccessible. Still, I don’t know anyone that would hand over their most prized possession to be rifled through for a research project, myself included. Even getting high-resolution and accurately-sized scans of every 1st printing page was a no-go. That would require fully opening the book and pressing every page against a scanner – a task much too perilous for such a valuable comic book. I wouldn’t do this with my own book and I’d never ask another collector to do such a thing.

Greetings everyone! What a busy time in the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! If you’re a TMNT comic book collector, you’ve hopefully weathered the 18 covers for TMNT #50 and 31 covers (yep. Thirty. One. !!) for Batman/TMNT #1. “But wait,” you ask. “Weren’t there only 29 covers for Batman/TMNT #1?” And I respond, “Yes, there WERE.” There are now 2nd and 3rd printings for Batman/TMNT #1. But it doesn’t stop there…Batman/TMNT #2 & #3 have reprintings and now even TMNT #55 & #56 have them!
So, given that there are already covers coming out of the woodwork for TMNT, here’s a rundown of the recent reprint covers so you don’t miss them. They’re smaller print runs and aren’t as publicized…and collectors frequently overlook them. Also, I would bet that all 6 issues of Batman/TMNT will have reprints so, although they won’t be listed here, keep an eye out for them as well. (more…)

To mark this special occasion, I created a variant cover for TMNT: A Collection (this website!)…TMNT #73 Cover RE TMNT: A Collection. For the front cover, I commissioned Jim Lawson to create artwork in the style of the original Mirage black & white comics, using TMNT Vol. I #1, Page 9 as inspiration (which is one of my favorite TMNT comic book pages; the “…Into The Night” theme of Page 9 was the basis for the design of this website). Here are Jim’s PENCILS and FINAL INKS for the front cover. For the back cover, I commissioned twentystar studio (designer of this website) to create a design that incorporated the ‘look & feel’ of TMNT: A Collection website along with a blank sketch area. This is the final back cover design.
