Hey everyone, some BREAKING NEWS to report…

I just received word that both TMNT #18 and #19 will be getting 2nd printings.  Take a look below for an advanced look at the covers for each of them.  Release dates for them are mid-April (likely 17th or 24th).  Currently scheduled for April 24, 2013 May 01, 2013.

Also, rumor has it that Secret History of the Foot Clan #3 will also be getting a 2nd printing but that has not yet been confirmed.  This has now been confirmed (along with Secret History #2 as well).  

February must have been a great month for TMNT and IDW !!

New TMNT Variant(s) Discovered !



Remember the TMNT The Ultimate Visual History book, published by Insight Editions back in 2014?  If you recall, each of those books included a bonus smaller-sized reprint of TMNT #1 inside a folder on the inside back cover.  Recently, some of those TMNT #1 reprint comics that were included with TMNT The Ultimate Visual History have been listed individually for sale on eBay.  However, they were listed without key information – that these TMNT #1 comic books were actually just the bonus reprint comic book included with every copy of TMNT The Ultimate Visual History.  Maybe the seller(s) honestly didn’t know this or maybe they were being purposely deceitful; regardless, these TMNT #1 reprint comics were very popular with buyers and some of them sold for over $300 !

A few people contacted me to see if I knew more about these rare small-sized TMNT #1 variants on eBay and where they came from.  I was able to inform them where these reprint TMNT #1 comics came from and that they were not rare.  In fact, they could be easily acquired by purchasing a copy of TMNT The Ultimate Visual History for under $35.  But as I was providing information to others, I started seeing something interesting…the TMNT The Ultimate Visual History books I found listed for sale online had two editions; one from 2014 and a new one from 2018.

Moving onward to the penultimate page from TMNT #1 with provenance proof, Page 38 is ready to attest with a wealth of information. Not only does Page 38 contribute evidence that strengthens the case for The TMNT #1 Production Negatives, it also provides an unexpected “little hint” of data; an additional clue that provides insight into a widely-believed theory about The TMNT #1 Production Negatives while, in the process, could prove something significant about an obscure TMNT comic book.

The TMNT #1 Production Negatives: Part 11 – Evidence From the Printed Pages

After discovering that The TMNT #1 Production Negatives were responsible for the creation of the 2nd printing, the next logical step was to then compare the negatives with the pages from a 1st printing; to do the same as I had with the 2nd and 3rd printings – overlay the negatives on every page.  With my 1st printing copy of TMNT #1 encapsulated in plastic, I was stuck.  To prove my assumptions, I needed to gain access to a 1st printing that I could inspect; an ungraded “raw” copy – no easy task.  Not only is TMNT #1 1st printing the most sought-after Copper Age comic book, it’s also worth thousands of dollars – even copies in rough condition.  I know a lot of collectors with a TMNT #1 1st printing in their collection but most of those are graded and slabbed – the inside pages inaccessible.  Still, I don’t know anyone that would hand over their most prized possession to be rifled through for a research project, myself included.  Even getting high-resolution and accurately-sized scans of every 1st printing page was a no-go.  That would require fully opening the book and pressing every page against a scanner – a task much too perilous for such a valuable comic book.  I wouldn’t do this with my own book and I’d never ask another collector to do such a thing.

TMNT Vol. V #001 (IDW)



Hey everyone.  IDW is set to release TMNT #1 on August 24, 2011.  While this is great news for TMNT comics fans, what you may not realize is that #1 is being issued with multiple variant covers – way more than the Creed/TMNT crossover.  As a TMNT comics “completist” it’s been absolutely mind-numbing trying to decipher how many covers are being released and then figuring out how to acquire them.  I’ve spent weeks gathering this information and I finally have it nailed down (see details below).

  1. Cover A (Dan Duncan) – Raphael; regular cover shipped in a 1:1:1:1 ratio (A, B, C, D) when ordered (i.e., if you ordered only 1 copy of #1 you could get either Cover A, B, C, or D).

It’s time for the final page of TMNT #1 to unleash all it has to say about the relationship between The TMNT #1 Production Negatives and the 1st & 2nd printings of TMNT #1 – Page 29.  Although the evidence that exists throughout TMNT #1 can hardly be called insignificant, what’s found on Page 29 is literally “The Smoking Gun” of it all.  While the previous eight pages were revealed in sequential page order, Page 29 was purposely saved for last because…the best should ALWAYS be saved for last.

This series documenting the provenance, details, and history of The TMNT #1 Production Negatives has now reached its end, but only after providing a full accounting of everything known (and a few things yet unknown) about these 40 relics from the past.  There’s no better way to honor and celebrate the 35th Anniversary of TMNT #1 than to revisit 1984 through The TMNT #1 Production Negatives – the source of nearly 10,000 printed books that started it all!
